Good packing is the difference between a move that goes smoothly and one that ends with broken dishes, missing chargers, and a sore back. After thousands of moves in Madison, our crew has seen it all — and these are the tips that actually make a difference on move day.
Start Earlier Than You Think You Need To
The #1 mistake Madison movers make is waiting too long to start packing. Begin 3–4 weeks out with non-essentials: books, seasonal clothes, decor, extra kitchen items. You'll thank yourself on move day.
Use the Right Box Sizes
Heavy items (books, tools, dishes) go in small boxes. Light items (linens, clothes, pillows) go in large boxes. Mixing it up creates back-breaking boxes nobody can lift — and increases the chance of dropping something.
Label Every Box on the Side, Not the Top
Most boxes get stacked during moves. If you label the top, you'll never see the label. Write the room name and contents on the SIDE of every box — so movers know exactly where to put it.
Don't Leave Empty Space in Boxes
Boxes with empty space collapse under weight. Fill gaps with towels, t-shirts, socks, or packing paper. Full boxes are actually safer than half-empty ones — and easier to stack.
Wrap Fragile Items Individually
Each plate, glass, and fragile item should be wrapped individually in packing paper or bubble wrap. Don't stack wrapped items directly — put crumpled paper between each layer.
Keep Clothes on Hangers
For hanging clothes, keep them on the hanger and wrap a garbage bag around the hanging section (open end down). It's faster than folding, and they're ready to hang at the new place.
Create an "Open First" Box
Pack one box of everything you'll need within the first hour of arriving: toilet paper, paper towels, soap, phone charger, coffee maker, a change of clothes. Label it "OPEN FIRST" in big letters.
Photograph Electronics Before Disconnecting
Before you unplug your TV, gaming setup, or home office, take a photo of all the cables. When you reconnect at the new place, you'll know exactly what goes where.
Disassemble Furniture the Night Before
Bed frames, bookshelves, and desks take time to break down. Do it the night before your move so the crew isn't waiting on you. Keep all hardware in a labeled zip-lock bag taped to the piece.
Don't Pack Everything — Donate First
Every item you don't move is money saved. The week before packing, do a quick purge of clothes, kitchen items, and furniture you don't love. Madison has great donation spots: Goodwill, ECHO, St. Vinnie's.
